7th June: General Practice Data for Planning and Research (GPDPR) data collection system (updated 9th June)
On the 1st July 2021, NHS Digital will launch the General Practice Data for Planning and Research (GPDPR) data collection system. This has now been delayed until September 1st at the earliest.
You have until 23rd June (now towards end of August) to opt out and you do this so by submitting either a Type 1 Opt-out (via the form attached here) or a National Data Opt-out (via the link https://www.nhs.uk/your-nhs-data-matters/) or both. 21st May 2021: Access to services update
We continue to be open and here for you. We are providing services as we have been doing throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. We are prioritising delivering of care and services based on clinical needs.
When you phone or go online, you will be asked to provide some information about your healthcare need. This will help the practice healthcare team assess the most appropriate way to provide your care, which may include a face-to-face consultation, and ensure it is provided by the most appropriate person. Face-to-face appointments are available to all patients where there is a clinical need.
Online (eConsult) consultation requests for non-urgent help can be made at any time from Monday to Friday. They will be responded to as soon as possible, usually within two working days. Alternatively, visit your local pharmacy for clinical advice on minor health concerns. For urgent issues or out of hours, you can also call the NHS on 111 or go online to seek NHS advice https://111.nhs.uk/
Appointments are being delivered face-to-face, by telephone, or using video calls and messaging to your mobile or computer – the practice team will assess what is most appropriate for you and if you have a preference you can discuss this with them.
Covid Vaccination Status
You can access your COVID vaccination status via the NHS app. You do not need to attend or phone the surgery to register for the App.
If someone who is travelling and doesn’t have a smartphone, they can ring 119 to get a letter. This must be at least 5 days after the course is completed.

Please do not contact us about providing proof of your COVID-19 vaccination status. GPs cannot provide letters showing your COVID-19 vaccination status.
19th May 2021: Remaining COVID Astra Zeneca / Oxford Vaccination Clinics
We will holding our final 2 second dose vaccination clinics on Thursday 27th May and Saturday 12th June. We are confident that we will have contacted everyone eligible for a second AZ dose (that had their first dose given by the Rookery) before these clinics. That said, if you know anyone or are someone who hasn't heard from us and still require a second jab please call the Practice on 664338 to arrange one.
Future vaccinations clinics are now being organised by the Suffolk Covid Service, please contact them on 0344 257 3961. These are for patients registered with Suffolk GP Surgeries only.
17th March 2021: Update on second vaccinations
It is now just over 8 weeks since we started administering the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccinations.
Government advice is that patients will be called about their second dose in week 11 or 12 - this applies to both the Pfizer and Astra Zeneca jab.
This means that you won't receive an invite from us for your follow-up vaccination until at least 11 weeks after your first. Inded it will probably be in the 12th week that we contact you.
Please don't worry - we are fully aware of who had the jab and on which date and will be in touch with you when necessary. There is no need to ring or email the Practice between weeks 4 and 11 after your first dose as we will not be able to confirm any second appointment during this time.
If we vaccinated you in the middle of January we look forward to contacting you at the beginning of April, most likely in the week after the Easter break.

There is also information about the vaccination centres and sites across Suffolk and North East Essex with local case studies and sites, including maps highlighting their location.

COVID Vaccination Programme Update: 9th February 2021
If you are aged 70 or over or are clinically extremely vulnerable (shielding) and have not yet had their COVID vaccination we encourage you to call us so we can book you an appointment. Similarly, if you have a friend or relative who is a patient here and you know they are yet to be vaccinated please pass this message on to them.

COVID Vaccination Programme Update: 29th January 2021
We are delighted to announce that we will be holding a COVID vaccination clinic in Newmarket at the Racing Centre on Saturday 6th February. Over the next few days our team will be busy contacting patients over 70 or those who are clinically extremely vulnerable (shielding patients) who haven't yet had their first vaccination. This is a very big undertaking so please bear with us if it takes us a few days to call you.

We are now in a position to start contacting patients between the ages of 75 and 79 for the next vaccination clinic on Saturday 30th January. Vaccine supply remains limited so if we are not in touch in the next few days please do not worry as we will get to you as soon as we can. Our thanks again for your patience and continued support.

COVID vaccine update: 12th January 2020
Our first COVID vaccination clinic will be held at the Jubilee Centre in Mildenhall on Sunday 17th January. We are currently in the process of inviting the first cohort of elgible patients for an appointment.
We have also been told that there will be two further deliveries of vaccine in week commencing 18th January and are working with our partner practices in the Forest Heath area to arrange the next sessions. More updates will follow as soon as we have further information.
Please remember not to call your local Practice regarding an appointment for the vaccine at this stage. We will phone you when you are eligible.
Update on COVID Vaccination Programme - 5th January 2021
Over the last few weeks we have been working with our neighbouring practices in the Forest Heath Primary Care Network (GP surgeries in Mildenhall, Red Lodge, Brandon, and Newmarket areas) to coordinate the setting up of a Covid-19 vaccination clinic for our local residents.
The final inspection took place yesterday morning at the Jubilee Centre, Mildenhall (at the back of Sainsbury’s) with members of the West Suffolk Clinical Commissioning Group and we are hoping to have confirmation of approval to use this site by the end of tomorrow. If we do get permission to proceed clinics should be starting towards the end of next week depending on vaccine delivery.
These clinics will be run on specific days jointly by staff from the above mentioned practices and will provide a vaccination service to our local population based on the clinical priority grouping defined by the Joint Committee on Vaccinations and Immunisations (JCVI).
ONCE WE RECEIVE FINAL APPROVAL FOR THE JUBILEE CENTRE TO BE USED FOR A COVID VACCINATION CLINIC AND ONCE WE KNOW THE FIRST DAY THAT VACCINATIONS WILL BE DELIVERED, WE WILL BE CONTACTING ELIGIBLE PATIENTS DIRECTLY WITH DETAILS OF WHEN TO ATTEND THEIR APPOINTMENT.
IN THE MEANTIME PLEASE DO NOT RING ANY OF THE PRACTICES ABOVE OR THE JUBILEE CENTRE REGARDING THE VACCINE AS YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO BOOK A COVID VACCINATION YOURSELF.
General Practice will be vaccinating patients in strict order of priority as per the list below:
i. Residents in a care home for older adults and their carers;
ii. All those 80 years of age and over and frontline health and social care workers
iii. All those 75 years of age and over;
iv. All those 70 years of age and over and clinically extremely vulnerable individuals (i.e. those patients who were advised to shield during the first wave);
v. All those 65 years of age and over;
vi. All individuals aged 16 years to 64 years with underlying health conditions which put them at higher risk of serious disease and mortality;
vii. All those 60 years of age and over;
viii. All those 55 years of age and over; and
ix. All those 50 years of age and over.

May 2020: My Care Record COVID-19 Update
Our organisation is part of the My Care Record approach which is supporting the work of health and care organisations across the East of England as they respond to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. For example, we are working to make sure doctors, nurses and co-ordination staff at places you may receive advice or treatment can see important information from your patient record. This could include NHS treatment centres such as the London NHS Nightingale Hospital. This will make it easier and faster for them to deliver effective care.

Forest Heath Primary Care Network (PCN)
Since the NHS was created in 1948, the population has grown and people are living longer. Many people are living with long term conditions such as diabetes and heart disease, or live with mental health problems and may need to access their local health services more often.
To meet these needs, practices have begun working together and with community, mental health, social care, pharmacy, hospital and voluntary services in their local areas in primary care networks.
Primary care networks build on the core of current primary care services and enable greater provision of proactive, personalised, coordinated and more integrated health and social care. Clinicians describe this as a change from reactively providing appointments to proactively caring for the people and communities they serve. Where emerging primary care networks are in place in parts of the country, there are clear benefits for patients and clinicians.
From 1st July 2019 a local primary care network has been formed between Brandon Medical Practice, Forest Surgery, The Surgery – Lakenheath, The Market Cross Surgery, Oakfield Surgery, Orchard House Surgery, The Reynard Surgery and Rookery Medical Centre serving our combined 71,000 patients in Newmarket, Mildenhall, Brandon and the surrounding villages. We have two Clinical Directors who will plan and lead us in having a real impact on the shape of primary care in our local area. Part of this will be through better collaboration as we are able to employ more specialist clinical staff than a single practice could do alone.
We will keep you updated as the Forest Heath Primary Care Network develops.

- Has a rash that does not fade when you press it
- Has a fit or convulsion

The Rookery and Local Pharmacies - Notice to Patients
Patients of The Rookery should be advised that they have the right to take their prescriptions to any pharmacy of their choosing.
Since 2017, The Rookery has been in commercial partnership with Lords Pharmacy in order to support extended hours access to pharmaceutical services.
Staff of The Rookery would not seek to influence patients’ choice of pharmacy services in any way. Those who would rather use another pharmacy that is more convenient should continue to do so.
For your information the opening times of the local pharmacies are:
- Boots: Monday – Saturday 08:30 - 18:00, Sunday 10:00 - 16:00
- Lords: Monday – Saturday 07:30 – 22:00, Sunday 09:00 – 19:00
- Superdrug: Monday – Friday 08:30 – 17:30, Saturday 09:00 – 17:30, Sunday CLOSED
- Tesco: Monday – Saturday 08:00 – 20:00, Sunday 10:00 – 16:00
Suffolk GP+ is for people who urgently need a doctor’s appointment or are unable to see their GP during normal GP hours.
Appointments can be made via Reception during our usual opening hours. Please note: patients cannot refer themselves to this service.
The service is staffed by local Suffolk GPs and Nurse Practitioners and is an NHS service delivered by the Suffolk GP Federation. The closest GP+ hubs to Newmarket are in Mildenhall and Bury St Edmunds.
You will be given a booked appointment and will be seen by a suitable local GP or nurse who will have access to your medical records (once consent is given).
The benefits of having an NHS Health Check
The NHS Health Check is offered to everyone aged 40-74 to prevent premature death from:
- heart disease
- kidney disease
It does this by picking up warning signs that your risk of these health conditions is higher than average. You can then be given lifestyle advice – and possibly medical treatment – to bring your risk down.
Some warning signs of cardiovascular disease, such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol, are "silent", which means they have no symptoms. So you can feel well even though your risk is raised. By attending your NHS Health Check, such "silent" problems can be uncovered and treated.

The tests work
The tests that form part of the NHS Health Check have been proven by large long-term studies to be able to detect serious health problems and work out your risk of getting these problems.
Knowing your risk factors helps you
Finding out that you have a risk factor for a health condition can be really helpful because you can take action to improve your health.
For example, if you find out your blood pressure is too high, you can make lifestyle changes to lower it, such as:
- stopping smoking
- eating a healthier diet
- exercising more
It may also prevent cancer and respiratory illness
The NHS Health Check is mainly aimed at lowering your risk of getting cardiovascular illnesses (diseases that affect the heart and blood vessels) such as heart disease and stroke. But the risk factors for heart disease and stroke are often the same as for other illnesses, including preventable cancers and respiratory illness. So the NHS Health Check could reduce your chances of getting certain cancers and respiratory illness, too.
You get a one-to-one health chat
The NHS Health Check gives you an opportunity to sit down with a health professional and talk about your health. There's good evidence that spending time with a healthcare professional to discuss exercise and other lifestyle issues can have real long-term benefits.
The Health Check Stats
The latest research suggests that:
- for every 27 people having an NHS Health Check, one person is diagnosed with high blood pressure
- for every 110 people having a Health Check, one person is diagnosed with type 2 diabetes
- for every 265 people having a Health Check, one person is diagnosed with kidney disease
Furthermore, these problems were successfully picked up almost three times as often in people who had an NHS Health Check than in those who did not.

Sharing your electronic health record and the benefits of doing so
Information about you is used in a number of ways by the NHS and social care services to support your personal care and to improve health and social care services for everyone.
NHS Digital is the national NHS organisation with a legal responsibility to collect data as people make use of NHS and social care services.
The data is used locally and nationally to help with planning, managing your care, supporting research into new treatments, identifying trends and issues and so forth, and is used to try to make services better for all.
As a Practice, we believe that the sharing of data, with those providers directly involved in the care of our patients is tremendously beneficial in the following ways:
- Providing accurate, up-to-date, and complete information about patients at the point of care
- Enabling quick access to patient records for more coordinated, efficient care
- Securely sharing electronic information with patients and other clinicians
- Helping providers more effectively diagnose patients, reduce medical errors, and provide safer care
- Improving patient and provider interaction and communication, as well as health care convenience
- Enabling safer, more reliable prescribing
- Enhancing privacy and security of patient data
- Reducing costs through decreased paperwork, improved safety, reduced duplication of testing, and improved health

Are you a carer?
If you look after your partner, or a relative or friend who needs help because they are ill or disabled, then you are a carer. You may have looked after someone for a long time without ever thinking of yourself as a carer.
There are different ways in which you may care for someone else. For instance, you might:
- visit a relative who lives far away once a month to check on their wellbeing
- arrange hospital appointments by telephone for a parent
- live close enough to a disabled friend to be able to drop in every day to provide a meal and some company
- move in with a relative to help them recuperate after a major operation
- be on hand to provide 24-hour constant care for your partner
Whether or not to take on a caring role is a decision that many of us will have to make at some point in our lives.
Being a carer can be rewarding, but at times may also feel overwhelming and demanding. Take time to review your options to ensure that you make the best decision for both you and the person who needs care. Getting help from friends and family can ease the stress, and as your General Practice we can provide support.
